American Staffordshire Terriers are many dogs to many peoople. What ever you want and demand in a dog, this one will give you. He is a beautiful dog of strength and power, fearless and determined, while at the same time intelligent, loyal, gentle, loving and devoted. Staffordshire attributes are numerous, as anyone who has experinced ownership of this breed can tell you. Generaly, they are healthy, and by taking a good care of him his living age is 12 to 16 years.
First and foremost, they are family dogs, they are never hapier than when with the humans they love and make fabulous house dogs, being quiet, neat, and not destructive. But, their nature never to refuse the challenge of another dog, which can appear at any moment in a suburban neighborhood where many people have pets. Such an altercation is hardly desirable and therefore should be avoided. Responsible Staffordshire owners fence in their yards, or an area of them, and their dogs, accompanied by an adult family member, are walked on leads for further exercise and relaxation.
There are a number of stories where Staffordshire Terrier became a hero by saving child from accident, danger and attack from fire, from prilous situations, and from vicious dogs of other breeds. He will fight to life or dead to protect his family. He will play for hours at a time, never seeming to tire.
Being quiet and not given to senseless barking, Amstaff make extremely effictive guard dog. The knowledge of one being present on the premises is a cautionary note to thieves and others with criminal intent who stand in awe of the breed.
Several well-known Amstaff owners have been taking their dogs to make therapy calls at children's hospitals and senior citizen centers and these visits are proving extremely beneficial to the patients, who seem to thoroughly enjoy the obedience performances the dogs provide. The performances are followed by petting sessions, during which the patients have the opportunity to meet and pet each dog.
Although they look rough and dangerous these dogs are babies in their heart, thoroughly enjoyong all the comforts of home, petting and lots of human companionship. They get along well with other household pets too, if the introduction is made tactfully and an early age.
It is tragic that same Amstaffs and Staffordshire-type dogs have been the subjects of extremely unfavorable publicity recently. There are some vicious individuals to be found in every breed and they are accepted as just that – vicious individuals. They learned them to be agressive, even towards people, not to mention how many dogs ended tragical at ilegal dog fighting. It is important to know that no dog is born vicious and agressive, they are learned to be that way.
